This campaign is a great idea. But we need more than just a talking shop. I completely agree that we need to spell out the benefits of PVC over timber. But this means action. We need concrete proposals backed up by hard cash if we’re going to get serious about promoting PVC. The timber lobby poured millions into their Wood for Good campaign to ensure it received national coverage across a whole range of media. We need to respond with something similar. I competely agree that we can’t rely on industry bodies such as the BPF or the big systems companies to do everything for us and welcome the suggestion that installers get involved. What I want to know is how we can start raising the cash this kind of campaign needs in order to actually make a difference. I’d put money up if I thought it would actually get results.

It’s good to see a PVC-U campaign finally thinking about installers. They are on the front line, the ones who most commonly come up against misinformed homeowners and specifiers who think timber is good and PVC-U is bad.

Installers need to have support from manufacturers and suppliers if they are going to counteract the public’s misconceptions about PVC-U.  As an industry, we’re been selling PVC-U without challenge for many years, and some may have forgotten how to sell its benefits to homeowners. But with timber on the rebound and claiming to be the only sustainable choice, it’s important to give installers the tools to fight back and make the case for PVC-U.

We’re happy to be involved to make sure this happens.

Mick is right in what he says. Nothing will turn off the majority of fabricators and installers quicker than another group of the same old faces having another venue to publicise there views. Without definitive goals that the whole industry can see as being for the collective good then what would be the point of another campaign?

The above being said, I would like to congratulate Martin for trying to get us all motivated to protect and enhance the market place within which we all earn our livings.

Factual education has to be the right way to fight the erroneous perceived ideas which have grown up around our industry and I for one would encourage and support any group who think likewise.
